Redondo Beach CA to La Paz, Mexico Passage
April 18th, 2011
Well we finally left Catalina this morning at 6am and are on our way
to La Paz. After two nights of good sleep, leisurely working
on a few projects, and of course a few Buffalo Milks, the crews
of Solstice and Hokule'a feel re-energized. We don't have any
wind right now, so we are motoring. We should be in Mexican waters
later tonight.

At 10:15 this morning, we cut the docklines and headed
out of King Harbor in Redondo Beach. A place that Jackie and I have
called home for the past 11 years. Hokule’a and
Solstice were given
a water cannon salute by the Harbor Patrol
at the mouth of the
harbor
and were then escorted out of the harbor by about 20 boats
filled with
family and friends. It was an amazing send off! Our plan
was to get fuel
in San Pedro and then sail straight to La Paz,
Mexico.
However, the past
few days of final boat preparations have been
exhausting. I have slept
a total of 6 hours over the past 48. After
discussions with the Solstice
crew, we decided to head to Catalina
after fueling to catch up on some much needed sleep. We will be
heading south tomorrow morning.
Jackie and I want to express our deepest thanks to all of our friends
and family that have helped us over the past few weeks to get ready
for
this adventure. Without your love and support, we couldn’t be
doing this.
Jake.
